Metal Roof Replacement Melbourne

New COLORBOND roofs to replace rusted, leaking or worn out metal roofs across Melbourne.

When an old galvanised, ZINCALUME or early COLORBOND roof is rusting through at the laps, fixings and gutter line, patching it only buys time. A metal roof replacement swaps the old sheets for new COLORBOND steel with new fixings, flashings and cappings, and fixes what is underneath while the roof is open.

Overview

Replacing a Metal Roof, Done Properly

Roof Guard Roofing replaces worn out metal roofs across Melbourne with new COLORBOND steel, on houses, extensions, garages and carports.

We start by inspecting the sheets, battens, sarking, flashings, gutters and roof pitch, so the new roof is the right profile and is detailed to drain properly. If only a few sheets or flashings have failed, a metal roof repair may be the better option, and we will tell you so.

Signs

Signs Your Metal Roof Needs Replacing

  • Rust through at laps, fixings, valleys or along the gutter line
  • Leaks that keep coming back after repairs
  • Holes, pitting or flaking paint across large areas of the roof
  • Old galvanised or ZINCALUME roofs at the end of their life
  • Loose or lifting sheets and worn out fixings
  • Water ponding because the sheet profile does not suit the pitch
  • Rusted flashings, cappings and box gutters
Materials

Choosing a COLORBOND Profile and Colour

Most metal re-roofs in Melbourne use COLORBOND steel in either a corrugated or a 5 rib (trimdek style) profile. Corrugated suits most pitched homes and gives a traditional look. A 5 rib profile carries more water and suits lower pitched roofs, garages and extensions.

The profile needs to suit the roof pitch, the length of each sheet and how much water each run carries. The colour is your call, though lighter colours reflect more heat. We will help you see how your choice sits with the gutters, fascia and the rest of the house.

Underneath

What Gets Replaced Underneath

A replacement is the best chance to fix what is under the old sheets. Depending on what the inspection finds, that can include new or re-fixed battens, new sarking or an insulation blanket, new ridge and barge cappings, new apron flashings, and new valleys or box gutters.

Gutters and downpipes are often replaced at the same time so everything matches and the roof drains properly.

Choosing

Repair or Replace a Metal Roof?

Not every rusty roof needs replacing. We show you what we find so you can compare the options before deciding.

Repair

Suits isolated rust, a few damaged sheets or failed flashings on a roof that is otherwise sound.

Replace

Suits widespread rust, leaks that keep coming back or a roof at the end of its life, where repairs would only chase the next problem.

Cost

Metal Roof Replacement Cost

Cost depends on the roof area, pitch, number of storeys, access, sheet profile, the number of flashings and penetrations, the condition of the battens and whether the gutters are being replaced too. That is why we quote after an inspection rather than giving a price per square metre over the phone. Our roof replacement cost calculator can give you a rough starting range.

Metal Roof Replacement FAQs

How long does a metal roof replacement take?

It depends on the roof size, access, pitch and weather. Garages and carports are usually quicker than a whole house. We give you an expected time frame with your quote.

Can you replace an old tin or galvanised roof with COLORBOND?

Yes. That is one of the most common jobs we do. The old sheets come off, the battens and flashings are checked or replaced, and new COLORBOND sheets go on in the profile and colour you choose.

Can a tiled roof be replaced with metal?

Yes. Changing from tiles to metal is covered on our roof replacement page, because it also involves new battens to suit the metal sheets.

Will my home be exposed to the weather during the work?

The old roof comes off in sections and new sheets go back on as we go, so the home is not left open. If rain is forecast, we plan the work around it.

Should I replace the gutters at the same time?

If the gutters are rusted, sagging or a different colour to the new roof, it usually makes sense to replace them at the same time. If they are in good condition, we leave them.

What warranty applies?

The quote sets out Roof Guard’s workmanship terms and the manufacturer warranty for the COLORBOND product used, which can depend on how close the home is to the coast.
