Roof Guard Has A Team Of Licenced Roof Plumbers
We employ a number of roof plumbers who are qualified to complete your project. From a new kilp-lok garage roof to a complete Colorbond re-roof we have it all covered. Here you will find some information on the metal roofing products we offer.
It has become a common practice to replace old metal and tiled roofs with Colorbond steel. Colorbond steel roofing is one of the most thermally efficient roofing materials available, it has superior corrosion resistance, excellent resistance to hail, when installed correctly it will be maintenance-free and it looks great. Keep in mind that the time needs to be taken to choose the right products for the right situations.
Compatibility
The first thing that must be considered when starting a metal roof replacement or renewal is the compatibility of the new and existing materials. All building products need to be checked for compatibility with adjacent materials. These checks need to be for both direct contact between materials, and where water runs from one material to another.
The following guidelines generally avoid material incompatibility:
For zinc-aluminium alloy coated steel, colour coated steel and galvanised steel roofs avoid copper, lead, green or treated timber, stainless steel and mortar or concrete.
In addition, galvanised steel roofs should not receive drainage from aluminium or any inert materials, such as plastics, glass, glazed tiles, colour coated and zinc-aluminium alloy.
Galvanised Steel
This was the main option of steel to choose from up until the mid 8O’s. These days it has been replaced by steel with much better effectiveness and efficiency. The only reason that we would install galvanised steel these days would be to comply with compatibility issues.
Zincalume Steel
Zincalume steel or “zinc” is the newer and improved version of galvanised steel. Zinc is much more resilient against corrosion and has a modern, aesthetically pleasing look. Zincalume steel carries a 25 year warranty from BlueScope Steel.
Colourbond Steel
For the past few decades COLORBOND steel has been the popular choice for many Australians and their roofing needs. COLORBOND steel is developed for, and therefore more resilient to, the intense sunlight and temperatures typical of Australian environments. Featuring a 22 designer-colour palette and advanced paint technology provides a durable, baked-on paint finish that resists peeling, chipping and cracking.
BlueScope Steel offers a warranty against corrosion to perforation by weathering in the natural elements for a period of up to 36 years from the date of installation. They also warrant that the paint system on COLORBOND steel will not flake or peel due to natural weathering for a period of up to 20 years from the date of installation.
Profiles
Once the type of material being used has been chosen it’s time to decide on the profile for the roof. This will be determined by the pitch of the roof and the length of the sheets to be installed. The pitch of the roof is most important in determining the profile used. A lower pitched roof will need a profile that has high sides as water will not be dispersed as quickly as a higher pitched roof. For example, if a corrugated sheet is used on a roof with a pitch less than 5°, it would quickly become submerged under water in a downpour. The end result of this could be catastrophic causing possible leaks and structural damage into the house.
The four main profiles we use are the following:
Corrugated
Still favoured for traditional styled housing, it is also the first choice for contemporary steel-roofed homes. Features include:
- Economical- low cost roof cladding
- Easy fixing- conventional through fixed screws maximise performance and installation
- 762mm cover- quick installation and easy handling
- 5 °minimum pitch- to suit most traditional applications
- Anti-capillary side caps
- Curving quality- available in G300 steel for architectural roofs or bullnosing
Longspan
The striking linearity, strength, wide cover, light weight and weather resistance of the longspan cladding make it perfect for many commercial roofing applications. Its excellent strength and ease of assembly allow for long economical spans. The water carrying capacity and weather tightness permit very low roof pitches. Longspan is also used for domestic applications, where a strong but uniform appearance is required. Features include:
- Easy fixing- conventional through fixed screws maximise performance and installation
- 700mm cover- quick installation and easy handling
- Spring curving- new data for curved roofs available
- Extended spans – strength and rigidity of the profile allow economical construction
Monoclad
The striking linearity, strength, wide cover, light weight and weather resistance of the monoclad cladding make it perfect for many commercial roofing applications. Its excellent strength and ease of assembly allow for long economical spans. The water carrying capacity and weather tightness permit very low roof pitches. Monoclad is also used for domestic applications, where a strong but uniform appearance is required. Features include:
- Economical- unique blend of characteristics provides low install costs
- Simple installation- through fixing and easy notching of flashings
- 762mm cover- quick installation and easy handling
- Deep Ribs- provide excellent spanning capability with good water carrying capacity
- Anti- capillary side laps- gives improved weather protection
- 2° Minimum pitch- reduces support structure
Speed Deck
Otherwise known as kilp-lok roofing. The visual appeal, strength, wide cover and weather resistance of speed deck make it perfect for all commercial roofing applications. The large water carrying capacity and weather tightness permit very low roof pitches. Speed deck is also used in domestic applications. Features include:
- Wide cover – 700mm
- Compatible lap join system which allows in-plane long run roofs and provides a solution for limited access sites
- Deep ribs- Stronger and stiffer with better water carrying capacity for roof slopes as low as 1°
- Full length clips- to locate ribs and compress insulation
- Four fixing points per clip
- Outstanding wind load resistance
- Spring curving available for arched and curved roofs
