CLEANING ROOF TILES - YOUR COMPLETE GUIDE
Cleaning your roof is no easy task however these tips will assist you to ensure you go into the job prepared and armed with all the information you need!
What to use when cleaning your roof tiles
We strongly recommend just using water when roof pressure cleaning your tiles. We clean using a petrol, high-pressure washing machine that will clean your roof with 4,000psi of water which comes straight from your garden tap. We use only regular water for our high-pressure roof cleaning services. No harmful chemicals are used whatsoever for the benefit of our clients and the environment surrounding their property.
Terracotta tiled roofs are extremely prone to moss/lichen growth and can be treated with a mould inhibitor to delay the time it takes for it to grow back. The surrounds of your property will also depend on how quickly the moss grows back (such as damp surroundings or large trees that overhang the roof).
The different ways to clean your roof tiles
Although you could manually go around with some form of towel or rag to clean each roof tile individually this would not only take an absurd amount of time but would also not be as effective as carrying out a high-pressure roof wash or hiring a roof cleaning service.
Preparation required when cleaning your roof tiles
There will always be some preparation when carrying out a roof pressure clean (especially to keep the rest of your property safe and free from damage). Firstly, you should have safety guard rail installed around the roof line to stop you from having a bad fall. Keep in mind you are causing the roof to become wet/slippery and if you don’t have much experience working on a roof or at heights you could cause harm to yourself.
Move any furniture from the ground that you don’t want to get wet or dirty as there will be some dirt/moss coming off the roof once washing commences. The same goes for inside as there is a chance water can get through skylights or vents so putting some towels down inside will also be a good idea.
Take note of surrounding properties. Will there be a large amount of dirt that goes onto your neighbours property? If so, you should be sure to take care by cleaning up any mess after or even using some tarps to catch the dirt.
Repairs required once the roof has been cleaned
We suggest checking for broken tiles both before and after the cleaning process to ensure you leave the roof in a watertight condition. It is also very common for the pointing to blow out when carrying out roof tile cleaning so contracting a roof expert to check for repairs is almost necessary.
Once the wash is complete you will then carry out the final clean up. This will include a rinse down of the house plus any surrounding areas that may have been affected by the mess plus putting back any furniture/outdoor items that will have been moved in the process.
